Never A Toy - Kalka Shimla Railway

In September 2007 UNESCO was considering the Kalka Shimla Railway in northern India for World Heritage status. This film follows the inspection of the railway for the preparation of the report on which the UNESCO decision would be based.

The Kalka-Shimla Railway opened for traffic on November 9, 1903. It connected Delhi with Shimla, which was India's summer capital until Independence in 1947. The town has monumental architecture and affords superb views of the main range of the Himalayas.
The railway's significance shows in the sturdy construction of the bridges and tunnels. Throughout its 96 kilometre length it runs through a succession of over 800 reverse curves of up to 36.57 metre radius, through 102 tunnels climbing the 2094 metres from Kalka to Shimla on a ruling gradient of 1 in 33.

The railway is an extraordinary feat of 19th century engineering skill.

This film was made with the assistance of Indian Railways Northern
Division and Indian Office of Railway Heritage.
