Kalka Shimla Railway
A small sample of events filmed on
the Kalka Shimla narrow gauge railway during the UNESCO inspection on September 2007. The companion film “Never
a Toy” shows the UNESCO inspection of the Kalka Shimla railway in full.
1. Steam from Kathleeghat to Kandaghat
During the UNESCO inspection of the Kalka Shimla Railway in September 2007 KC 520, the restored steam loco, made
a run from Kathleeghat to Kandaghat, crossing the two most famous stone bridges en route. Views are from lineside
and on the train.
2. Kathleeghat to Shoghi by Cab
The UNESCO inspection lasted four days. Starting in Kalka, Dr Robert Lee, the team leader, inspected the narrow
gauge diesel workshops. Three days later he took a cab ride in diesel number 186.
3. Kalka Shimla Railmotor
Since 1911, the KSR has offered premium express first class service by railcar, shaving more than two hours from
the normal passenger train time. A trip from Kandaghat to Shimla in the front seat of rail motor No. 3. During
the UNESCO Inspection Dr Robert Lee examined drawings, and on the final day rode from Shoghi to Shimla. The motor
is seen being turned at SHimla.
4. Rajasthan: Jaisalmer to Pokaran by Cab
After the UNESCO inspection of the Kalka Shimla Railway in September 2007 the team took a short break in Rajasthan.
The crew of the train we were to take from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur invited us to ride the first leg, to Pokaran, in
the cab of WDM3A class diesel No. 18843 . This film records that event.
